Warts are a viral infection which is considered one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Up to 80% of sexually active people are exposed to HPV in their lifetime, but not all develop warts. The individual's immune defense plays a key role in the appearance of warts. The correct diagnosis and treatment of warts helps to fight the virus, as well as its spread, while regular control with a Pap test is essential for every woman with a history of warts, always in collaboration with the gynecologist.<\/p>

The diagnosis of warts is mainly clinical and can be confirmed by biopsy. The biopsy site is carefully selected and local antisepsis and anesthesia are applied. The sampling can be done with a round knife up to 5mm in diameter (Punch biopsy) or surgically, while in any case stitches are inserted at the point of the incision. The sutures are removed at the time indicated by the dermatologist, while the material taken is sent to the histopathologist. The material can be sent for immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence or even molecular testing depending on what is required to diagnose the problem.<\/p>

How are warts treated?<\/strong><\/p>

At Athens Dermatology we specialize in the treatment of warts. In addition to the medicinal treatment that includes topical creams, we apply established techniques, such as cryotherapy, where we use liquid nitrogen in a spray to "cauterize" each lesion. Our center has excellent application experience\u00a0CO2 laser<\/strong>\u00a0in the treatment of warts, with excellent results from the very first treatment session. Each lesion is treated using local anesthesia, followed by topical care at home, usually with an antibiotic cream or powder.<\/p>

What should I expect after treating warts?<\/strong><\/p>

After treating the warts with a topical cream, the area appears slightly red and with a burning sensation, which is normal, but necessary for the therapeutic effect of the drug. In the case of cryotherapy or CO2 Laser use, the treated areas show small crusts that gradually fall off and give way to healthy, undamaged skin. The entire duration of recovery is approximately 10 days, while it is advisable for the patient to refrain from sexual contact until complete healing. In the effectiveness of the treatment of warts, the patient's compliance seems to have an important role regarding the adherence to the treatment. The patient comes for a recheck in 20-30 days, while repetitions of the treatment may be needed until the desired result.<\/p>
