Androgenetic Alopecia

Disease

Androgenetic alopecia is a condition that leads to permanent hair loss (alopecia) and is related to a genetic background. It can affect both men and women.

Androgenetic Alopecia in men

It is the most common form of alopecia in men. The thinning of the hair begins at the front line of the forehead and temples, which may coexist with thinning in the center of the scalp. As it progresses, it may reach the point of affecting the entire head, usually except for the back of the head (occipital region) and low sides at the temples.

Androgenetic Alopecia in women

Although it is more common in men, it is a condition that can also affect women, especially after menopause. The pattern of thinning in women is different and involves overall thinning of the hair and thinning of the hair on the top of the head.

What is it due to?

Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic disease and it is believed that the predisposition to appear is hereditary. The action of androgens on the hair follicle is involved. It can begin at a young age, from the 20s or 30s, and worsen rapidly. Exogenous environmental factors may aggravate the clinical picture in a predisposed person. These include intense stress, nutritional deficiencies, some medications and scalp skin diseases. Androgenetic alopecia in women has been associated mainly with hormonal disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome and disorders in the functioning of the thyroid gland.

The diagnosis

Trichoscopy and/or trichorhizogram is the most basic diagnostic method as it allows the dermatologist to assess the number, density and quality of hair follicles. It is a non-invasive method that is also used to monitor the results of treatment.

The dermatologist may also perform a pull test to assess the number of hairs being lost and perhaps blood tests to check for nutritional and hormonal factors.

The treatment options

If medical causes and hormonal disorders are found, they will need to be addressed for treatment for androgenetic alopecia to be effective.

Treatment can be non-invasive and include topical medication, mainly minoxidil and finasteride.

At the same time, complementary therapy that enhances the effect of scalp mesotherapy and autologous RPR mesotherapy may be recommended. Some patients, however, improve only with hair transplantation from healthy to the affected area.
