Variegated dandruff
This is a form of skin fungus that is not contagious but can be aesthetically disturbing.
What causes dandruff?
It is caused by a fungus, of the genus malassezia, which is naturally present on our skin. Humidity, intense oiliness of the skin, and increased sebum production contribute to its proliferation, and then it begins to cause problems, but the disease is not transmitted from one person to another. It is also a form of dermatitis that occurs most often in adolescents and young adults.
The symptoms
The fungus affects the natural pigment of the skin and tinea versicolor manifests itself with small or larger spots, in a lighter or darker color than that of the skin. On them, the skin may show a fine peeling. The spots are concentrated on the trunk and arms and more rarely on the neck and face. Apart from these, it does not cause itching, irritation or other symptoms, but it can recur, that is, the spots disappear and reappear.
The treatment
Although it does not cause problems or discomfort, if left untreated, this fungal infection can cause severe discoloration of the skin, especially in the summer months when we "tan". By performing a clinical examination, the dermatologist will make the diagnosis and provide the appropriate treatment, which may include creams, lotions, sprays or oral treatment. We consider the fungal infection to be cured in 4 weeks. The normal color of the skin, however, may take a few months to restore.
Is there prevention?
Good personal hygiene and regular showering if you have very oily skin on your body will help. Avoid oily sunscreens and prefer those in gel form and wear clothes made of natural fabrics that allow the skin to breathe. In a few cases, the dermatologist may also recommend prophylactic treatment with occasional use of specific preparations.
