What is menopause?

All women experience menopause as part of the normal aging process. The term "menopause" can describe any of the changes a woman goes through either shortly before or after her period stops, marking the end of her reproductive period.

The average age of menopause is 51 years, but some women may suffer from menopausal symptoms for up to 10 years, and 0.1% of women have symptoms in their 20s. While some women experience no symptoms during menopause, other women are plagued with symptoms such as:

Hot flashes/ Night sweats | Pain / stiffness in joints | Dry skin and hair | Pain on contact | Sleep disorders | Fatigue | Mood swings | Irritability | Panic attacks | Anxiety | Low mood | Lack of concentration | Gulf dryness | Vaginal atrophy | Vaginal relaxation | Itchy skin | Weight gain | Low libido | Urinary incontinence | Recurrent urinary tract infections | Irregular periods

The skin in menopause

Especially when it comes to the skin, menopause causes the skin to age faster, causing aesthetic changes such as wrinkles and sagging, and structural changes such as thinning of the epidermal layer. Dry skin is usually the first symptom of skin aging evident in menopausal women, and loss of skin firmness and elasticity usually follows quickly. Menopausal changes reduce the skin's protective capacity, increasing the risk of infection and reducing the skin's ability to recover from injury. The aesthetic changes that occur in menopause can also have a significant psychological impact. The appearance of the skin is related to perceptions of beauty, and the changes in the skin that occur in menopause affect in a negative way. As a result, some women may experience reduced self-confidence and negative effects on their quality of life.
